Batch Accrual

Batch Accrual is the processing of loyalty point earnings in groups at scheduled intervals rather than immediately upon each qualifying transaction. It creates a time gap between the qualifying activity and the posting of points to the member account.

Batch accrual is a processing choice, not a member benefit. The system holds qualifying transactions in a queue and posts the resulting points at a scheduled time, usually once per day. Real-time accrual posts points the moment the transaction settles. The difference is the length of time a member waits to see a change in balance.

The wait matters more than operators assume. A member who buys a coffee and sees points appear immediately connects the reward to the action. The same member who sees points appear the next morning has already forgotten the transaction. The accrued value feels like an afterthought, and engagement drops accordingly.

Consider a member who earns 500 points per stay. In a 30 day month, three stays yield 1,500 points. If the programme processes accruals in a daily batch, those points arrive as three separate postings on three different days. The arithmetic is identical, but the member never sees a single balance jump of 1,500 points. The lag reshapes how the earning feels without changing the total.

Batch processing survives mainly in legacy systems and in partnerships where data is exchanged on a periodic schedule. A programme that chooses batch accrual for cost savings is trading member satisfaction for an operational convenience. That trade is rarely worth it, because the member sees the delay but not the saving.

Batch accrual also distorts liability reporting. Points are earned at the moment of qualifying activity, but the operator does not record them until the batch runs. Between the activity and the posting, the programme carries an unrecognised liability. Actuarial models that rely on posted point balances will understate the true obligation by the size of the pending batch.

Batch accrual is technical debt from an era when nightly processing was the only option. Today it is a choice, and usually the wrong one for member-facing balances. A programme that cannot post points immediately should state the delay clearly in its terms, because members notice the lag even when they do not complain.
