Earn Partner
An earn partner is a company that awards points or miles in a loyalty programme to members who transact with it, typically outside the programme's own core business.
The earn partner is the most dangerous source of accrual in a loyalty programme, not because it is optional but because it is easy to mistake for loyalty. A partner pays the operator for points that members earn on outside spending, and the operator books that income without engaging its own product.
The contract works on cross subsidy. The partner buys points at a wholesale rate below the redemption value, and the member earns at a rate set by the operator. That spread is real revenue, but it depends on the member never comparing the programme's core value to the partner's offer.
Now the arithmetic. A member charges 2,000 dollars to a co-brand card at 2 points per dollar, earning 4,000 points. The partner pays the programme 1.5 cents per point, so the programme receives 60 dollars. If those points are redeemed at 2 cents per point, the liability is 80 dollars, a 20 dollar loss on that account before any core programme activity occurs.
Partner transactions also corrupt the active member rate. A programme that counts card swipe activity from members who never use the core product reports a healthy engagement number while the relationship decays. Active member rate is meant to measure loyalty, not just consumption through a renamed payment card.
Activity based qualification makes the problem worse. When partner spend counts toward tier, the programme hands status to members who may never produce a single core stay or flight. That turns status into a commodity and devalues it for the members who earned it on the programme's own terms.
The defensible position is to cap partner earning and to exclude most partner activity from qualification. Earn partners fund the programme, but they do not build it. Treating their transactions as equal to core engagement is a slow liquidation of the programme's own relevance.
