Fixed Award Chart

A fixed award chart is a published redemption schedule that states the number of points required for a specific reward, such as a flight segment or hotel night, and keeps that number constant until the programme changes the chart.

A fixed award chart makes the cost of a redemption predictable for the member and the cost of the liability predictable for the programme. That predictability is the entire appeal. It is also the reason the chart must be defended, because every pressure on loyalty economics points away from it.

Work the arithmetic. A fixed chart prices a domestic flight at 25,000 points. If the cash fare is 300 dollars, the member redeems at 1.2 cents per point. If the fare rises to 500 dollars, the same redemption yields 2 cents per point. The fixed chart transfers cash price volatility to the programme, which books a higher cost when cash prices spike.

Accrual and fixed charts are two halves of the same value proposition. A member who earns points at a slow rate and redeems from a chart set high gets a poor deal. One who earns fast and redeems from a chart set low gets a good one. Programmes tune both dials, and a change to one without the other is a silent devaluation.

Activity-based qualification ignores the fixed chart entirely. A member qualifies for elite status by flying segments or staying nights, not by redeeming points. That separation is deliberate. It lets the programme reward loyalty on activity while controlling redemption cost on a separate axis, and it prevents a single chart change from destroying status progress.

The actuarial model prefers fixed charts because the cost per redemption is a constant, not a function of cash revenue. The uncertainty shifts entirely to redemption frequency. Dynamic pricing makes cost per redemption variable, which forces the model to estimate a joint distribution of cash prices and redemption demand, and that is a harder problem than most programmes admit.

Fixed award charts are the only version of a loyalty programme that keeps its promise. When a programme moves to dynamic pricing, it stops selling points and starts selling a discount on cash, which is a different product wearing the same name.
