Franchise Participation
Franchise participation is the requirement for independently owned hotels operating under a chain flag to issue, honour, and fund that chain's loyalty points on the same terms as managed properties, while carrying their own liability for unredeemed points.
Franchise participation is the cost a hotel owner accepts when they sign a franchise agreement. The chain sells the flag on the promise of its loyalty programme, but the obligation to fund points lands on the property, not on the brand. Every point issued at that front desk is an accrual that the owner must carry.
The chain sets earn and redemption rates centrally, while the franchisee books the liability locally. A franchisee does not get the chain's actuarial model for breakage or redemption timing. That model is the one number that determines whether the property's accrual is adequate, and it is kept inside the chain.
Work the arithmetic on a single month to see the exposure. A franchised hotel issues 150,000 points at a liability rate of 0.6 cents per point, so it books a 900 dollar accrual. If the chain's programme wide breakage assumption is 20 percent, the hotel expects to settle 720 dollars and release 180 dollars later. Move that assumption to 25 percent and the expected release becomes 225 dollars, a 45 dollar swing on one month, before any member has changed behaviour.
Activity based qualification rules make the franchisee a gatekeeper of member status. A stay at a franchised property counts identically to one at a managed property, so the franchisee's reporting controls who reaches a tier and who does not. Under reporting a stay reduces the franchisee's liability but quietly devalues the programme for the member.
Franchise participation is the least transparent part of hotel loyalty economics. The brand consolidates liability in its accounts, but that liability is actually held by hundreds of separate owners who cannot see the assumptions behind it. That is a structural weakness, not a detail.
