Free Night Certificate

A free night certificate is a stored award entitling a member to one complimentary night at a participating hotel, usually capped by category or brand and expiring after a set period.

The certificate is not a point balance. It is a claim on one room night, and that claim is usually restricted before it is ever used. A category cap limits the award to a defined set of properties, and an expiry date removes the liability if the member does not act. These constraints are why operators prefer certificates to straight point bonuses, and why members should value them below the headline room rate.

Earning a certificate through activity-based qualification changes what the member has accrued. A points balance accrues at a known rate per dollar, but a certificate accrues only when a threshold of stays or partners is reached. That makes the certificate a binary reward, not a linear one, and it pushes members to take extra stays they would otherwise not book.

Actuarial models do not handle these certificates well. A point liability can be spread across many redemption outcomes, but a certificate liability is a fixed claim on a room night that expires on a single date. When a category changes, the value of outstanding certificates jumps in a way that a smooth accrual model does not predict.

The arithmetic of a capped certificate shows why the cap matters more than the face value. A certificate for a night that would otherwise cost 50,000 points saves more than one for a night costing 35,000 points. The gap is 15,000 points, and that gap is the cost of choosing a lower category simply because the certificate expires soon.

The expiry clause should be read as a breakage lever, not a member benefit. A certificate that goes unused is not a favour to the member; it is a reduction in the programme's liability. Operators count on a predictable share expiring, and they issue more certificates than they could honour if every member woke up on the same day. That is exactly the actuarial blind spot from the previous paragraph, and it makes the free night certificate the loyalty industry's most quietly profitable unmet promise.
