Hybrid Program
A hybrid programme combines spend-based accrual with activity-based qualification in one loyalty model, so points are earned on revenue while tier status depends on actions such as stays or flights. It rewards both money and engagement without letting either alone control status.
A pure accrual model rewards only spending, and a pure activity model rewards only actions such as flights or stays. A hybrid model refuses to choose: it earns points on revenue and qualifies tiers on activity, so a member cannot buy status with spending alone and cannot fly to top tier without spending. The compromise is useful, but it is also the source of its own risk.
The trap is a model that calls itself hybrid while letting one lever dominate. Many programmes set accrual earn rates so generous that activity qualification becomes a side note, or so thin that only heavy spenders ever reach status. Either way, the model silently collapses into a single-lever design, and the hybrid label becomes marketing rather than mechanics.
Work the arithmetic. A member spends 10,000 dollars and earns 1 point per dollar, so accrual yields 10,000 points. The top tier requires 50,000 points or 30 stays in a year. The 10,000 points are exactly 20 percent of the 50,000 points needed, and with zero stays the member must complete all 30 stays to qualify on activity. The model forces a choice, and the choice is visible in the numbers.
A hybrid model also demands different diagnostics than a pure model. A pure accrual programme tracks average revenue per member, and a pure activity programme tracks stays or flights. A hybrid programme must track both, and the active-member-rate becomes the early warning when activity falls even if spend holds. Operators that look only at revenue will miss activity decay until tier qualification collapses.
The strongest hybrid programmes make the trade explicit to members. They state the spend and activity thresholds, they show progress on both, and they refuse to reweight the two silently. A hybrid that hides the weights is a pricing engine wearing a loyalty costume.
