Membership Year
Membership Year is the fixed period, usually 12 months, over which a loyalty programme counts qualifying activity for earning or renewing a tier, and after which the count resets to zero.
The membership year is the counting window that turns activity into status. It is not simply the calendar year, although many programmes default to that. It determines when qualifying points or stays begin to count toward a tier, when they stop counting, and when the member is reassessed.
Programmes split into two camps. The first uses a fixed common year, usually 1 January to 31 December or the operator's fiscal year. The second uses a rolling year anchored to each member's enrolment date. The rolling version is worse for members because no two members face the same deadline, and it makes status comparisons impossible across the programme.
The serious trap is a mismatch between the membership year and the qualification period that earns the tier. A programme may require a member to earn a tier within a single membership year, but then grant the status for a different validity period. That is not a longer membership year, it is a qualification window plus a separate status validity, and the two are often confused.
Work the calendar arithmetic, because the start month decides how hard the year is. A member who joins in March under a calendar year programme has only 10 months to earn status before the year ends, not the 12 months a January joiner gets. The gap is 2 months, which is a 20 percent reduction in the available qualification period. The same programme is 20 percent harder for a March joiner without a single rule being different.
Operators should publish the membership year start and end dates on the status page, not only in clause 14 of the terms. A fixed common year is the correct default because it aligns every member to the same reset date and makes the tier promise legible. A rolling year is a private clock, and a private clock is where status quietly gets harder.
