Points Advance

Points Advance is a booking feature that lets a loyalty programme member reserve an award stay before earning the full points required. The member must earn the shortfall or pay an agreed cash alternative by a set deadline, otherwise the reservation is released.

Points Advance lets a member book a reward stay before the full points balance is available. The programme issues a reservation on the promise that the member will earn the missing points or pay a cash payment by a fixed date before arrival. This is a credit arrangement dressed as a redemption feature.

The first problem is that the member bears all the earning risk. A normal award booking spends points already held. Points Advance spends points the member does not yet have, and the programme loses nothing if the member fails to earn them. The reservation simply lapses, and the hotel keeps the room open for revenue sale without paying out a single point.

The arithmetic exposes the pressure. A member books a 30,000 point stay while holding 12,000 points. That leaves an 18,000 point shortfall, which is 60 percent of the award price. If the member earns 6,000 points each month, covering the gap takes 3 months. If the stay is 2 months away, the member is 1 month short and must buy points or pay cash at a rate the programme sets.

Points Advance is not a true advance. In a true advance, the member receives the reward and repays the points later. Here the member receives nothing until arrival, and if the points are not earned, the member gets no compensation and no extension. The programme captures a booking intention without incurring a redemption liability. This is a classic breakage style mechanism, but the liability is shifted entirely to the member's future earning capacity.

The only sensible use is when two conditions hold: the member already has a firm schedule of point accrual from credit card spending or a partner transfer, and the cash fallback price is not worse than buying points outright. Otherwise the feature is a trap. A member who books a speculative award and fails to earn the points has given the hotel a free option on their travel intention while receiving nothing.
