Staff Discount
Staff discount is a reduction in price granted to employees of a retailer or grocer, distinct from any loyalty programme benefit. It should be excluded from loyalty point accrual.
Retailers and grocers routinely treat staff discount as a loyalty programme feature. That is a category error. A staff discount is an employment benefit, earned by signing a contract and showing up for shifts, not by spending behaviour. Allowing staff to earn loyalty points on already discounted purchases double rewards the same transaction for nothing.
Loyalty programmes run on activity-based qualification. A member earns points by making a qualifying purchase, reaching a tier, or completing a stay. A staff discount does none of these things. It accrues because the buyer is an employee, not because the buyer did anything the programme is designed to reward. Staff discount therefore bypasses the core logic of loyalty accrual.
Work the arithmetic on a simple basket. A staff member buys goods worth 100 dollars and receives a 20 percent staff discount, paying 80 dollars. If the loyalty programme awards 2 points per dollar on the pre-discount total, that purchase earns 200 points. If points accrue only on the discounted amount, the same purchase earns 160 points. The difference is 40 points, which is exactly 20 percent of the points earned, mirroring the discount percentage. This double count is not a rounding error, it is a structural subsidy.
The actuarial model treats every issued point as a future liability. Points earned on staff discounted purchases are no different on paper, but they are different in behaviour. Staff members already shop at the store because they work there, so those points do not buy incremental visits or deeper engagement. An actuarial model that does not separate staff accrual from member accrual will overstate the liability and misprice the whole programme.
The cleanest fix is to exclude staff discounted purchases from loyalty point accrual entirely. A staff discount is already a benefit and does not need loyalty points stacked on top. Some operators instead reduce the earn rate for staff, say to half a point per dollar, but half measures create confusion and arbitrage opportunities. If a staff discount is worth 20 percent, no number of loyalty points will change the fact that the member is not choosing the store for the points.
