Tier Benefit

Tier Benefit is a privilege or reward unlocked at a specific status tier within a loyalty programme, beyond the base earn rate. It may include bonus earning, waived fees, lounge access, or priority service. The value of a tier benefit depends on how often a member actually uses it, not on its published list price.

Tier benefits are not a reward for loyalty. They are an investment in future behaviour. A programme that hands Gold members a free breakfast is not being generous, it is buying the next stay at a lower cost than the revenue that stay will bring.

The most common valuation error is to price a tier benefit at its advertised list value. A lounge pass listed at many dollars is not worth that to a member who would not buy it in cash. The benefit is worth only what the member would pay for it, which is often nothing. Programmes exploit the gap between list price and willingness to pay when they sell status matches and co-brand cards.

Work the arithmetic, because status marketing collapses under it. A programme awards Gold members a 20 percent bonus on base points. On 10,000 dollars of annual spend at 1 point per dollar, the base earn is 10,000 points, the Gold bonus is 2,000 points, and the cash value at 0.5 cents per point is 10 dollars. The programme may advertise Gold benefits worth 800 dollars, but a member who values the lounge access at 50 dollars and the bonus points at 10 dollars is receiving 60 dollars of real value on 10,000 dollars of spend, a 0.6 percent return.

Tier benefits are priced into the earn rate. A programme that advertises a rich Gold tier has already reduced the base earn rate to pay for it. Members who never use the Gold benefits are subsidising members who do. That is why tier benefits must be evaluated only by incremental value over the tier below, not by headline perks.

The honest measure of a tier benefit is the cash a member would have spent to buy the same service elsewhere, minus what the member already receives at the lower tier. Any other number is marketing, and it should be treated as such.
