Tier Threshold
A tier threshold is the number of qualifying points, stays, or spend a member must accumulate within a set period to reach or retain a specific loyalty tier. It is the programme's demand, not a benefit.
A tier threshold is the programme's price for status. It translates loyalty into a number: nights stayed, points earned, or spend charged. The threshold is not a description of member behaviour; it is a demand the programme makes before recognising that behaviour as valuable.
The trap is setting the threshold above what genuine loyalty requires. A programme that asks for 40 nights a year is not measuring commitment; it is manufacturing a revenue floor. Members respond by chasing the number, not the relationship. That chasing is visible in every status match request and mattress run.
Thresholds sit on top of three other mechanisms. Accrual rules decide which transactions count toward the threshold and which accrue but do not qualify. ASC 606 forces the programme to treat the promise of future tier benefits as a performance obligation, so the threshold becomes a liability trigger, not just a marketing lever. Award availability is the scarce resource the threshold rations, and higher tiers get first claim on it. All three make the threshold more than a line in a terms document.
The arithmetic exposes the cliff. A programme sets a Silver threshold at 10 stays and a Gold threshold at 30 stays. The gap is 20 stays, so a member with 19 stays receives the same status as one with 10 stays. Reduce the Gold threshold to 20 stays and that same member now qualifies, while the programme has cut its demand by 10 stays. Every threshold change is a transfer of value between the programme and the member who sits just below the line.
A threshold that is published and stable is a contract term. A threshold that moves silently is a price increase. Programmes that want member trust should treat threshold changes like fee changes: announce them in advance and honour the old threshold for the current qualification year. Anything less is a programme saying its members' time has no value.
