Community Program
Community Program is a loyalty programme model where the primary value of membership comes from collective identity and shared participation rather than individual spend. Members join for belonging, access to peers, or a common purpose. The programme measures health through group engagement, not per member revenue, and typically has no meaningful accrual engine or formal tier structure.
Community Programmes replace individual spend with collective identity. They deliberately set aside accrual as the core mechanic, because what members accumulate is not points but standing among peers. The most honest version gives every member the same visible status, with no tiers and no hidden elite track.
Active member rate is the metric most often cited to prove a community programme is working, and it is the easiest to fake. A logged in visitor who reads one post in a month counts as active on many dashboards, so a healthy active member rate may hide a community where a tiny minority creates everything and the rest only consume.
Activity based qualification is the usual counter, and it creates a points economy in disguise. Requiring a set number of actions to unlock a perk turns attention into an earn currency, complete with the same grind and burnout as spend based programmes. The community that adopts this model has simply renamed its tiers.
A community programme gives 10 points for each referred partner. A member who refers 40 partners earns 400 points. Those 400 points convert to 4 dollars at the programme's 0.01 dollars per point rate, which is 80 percent of the 5 dollar minimum redemption threshold. That looks like a gift until you notice the member did not earn a single point from their own participation, only from recruiting others.
The honest community programme does not pretend to be a revenue engine. It pays for itself in reduced acquisition cost and lower churn, which show up elsewhere on the P&L. Operators who force community into a points accrual model are not building a community, they are running a loyalty programme with extra steps.
