McDonald’s will move its loyalty program to tiers, chief marketing officer Morgan Flatley said at the chain’s investor day on September 23, 2026. The goal is to separate its most frequent guests from occasional ones.

Flatley did not give a launch date or a number of tiers. She described three groups of members by visit frequency: guests who come more than once a month, guests who come about once every 90 days, and lapsed members who have not visited in a few months. The first group could see faster points earning and early access to limited-time items; the second, game-like challenges that encourage more visits; the lapsed group, benefits such as a birthday bonus.

CEO Chris Kempczinski said loyalty members drive about 30% of sales. Reuters notes that the move follows a wider restaurant trend toward tiers and away from broad discounting, after Starbucks announced a similar change in January.

For program owners, the interesting part is the middle group: tiers work best when they give occasional guests a visible next step.
