Program teardown
Sephora Beauty Insider tiers, explained
The short answer
Sephora Beauty Insider is a free program with three tiers based on calendar-year spend: Insider, VIB from $350 and Rouge from $1,000. Every member earns 1 point per dollar on Sephora merchandise and can turn 500 points into $10 off, while the higher tiers add exclusive rewards.

Sephora Beauty Insider is built on a small number of rules that any member can repeat: everyone earns the same way, and status changes what you can do with your points. This teardown describes how the program works, based on Sephora’s own program pages, and what a retailer designing its own program can take from it.
What is Sephora Beauty Insider?
Beauty Insider is Sephora’s free rewards program in the United States and Canada. Members earn points on merchandise purchases and redeem them for rewards. There is no fee to join, so the program has to pay for itself through the purchases it encourages.
The program has three levels. Insider is where every member starts. VIB, short for Very Important Beauty Insider, and Rouge are earned with spend.

How do members earn points?
Earning is flat. Members at every tier, Insider, VIB and Rouge alike, receive 1 point for every dollar spent on Sephora merchandise, online, in Sephora stores, in Sephora at Kohl’s stores in the US and through some delivery partners. Sephora runs bonus point events from time to time, with their own terms.
A flat earn rate is easy to explain at the counter and in the app. It also keeps the cost of points predictable for finance, because every dollar of sales creates the same obligation, whoever the customer is.

How do the Beauty Insider tiers work?
Status is set by spend in a calendar year. The table summarizes the thresholds and the extras Sephora lists for each level.
| Tier | How to qualify | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Insider | Join for free | 1 point per dollar, 500 points for $10 off, a Birthday Gift |
| VIB | $350 of Sephora merchandise in a calendar year | Access to exclusive rewards, such as full-size products |
| Rouge | $1,000 of Sephora merchandise in a calendar year | Exclusive rewards and a $100 Rouge Reward for 2,500 points |
Two design choices stand out. First, the tiers do not change the earn rate: a Rouge member earns points at the same rate as an Insider. Second, the higher tiers change the redemption menu instead, with exclusive rewards and, at Rouge, a reward worth $100.
How do members use their points?
The program offers two kinds of redemption. The first is cash-like: all members can redeem 500 points for $10 off a purchase of $10 or more, which Sephora calls Beauty Insider Cash. The second is a catalog of rewards, such as product samples, bundles and experiences, which members choose from their point balance. VIB and Rouge members see additional exclusive rewards in that catalog.
Every member can also redeem one Birthday Gift a year, during the month of their birthday. In a store, no purchase is needed to collect it.
Points do not last forever without activity. Sephora says unredeemed points expire when a member has had no point activity, a purchase or a redemption, for 12 months or more.
What does the design get right?
Seen from a program designer’s seat, Beauty Insider balances simplicity and aspiration.
- One earn rule for everyone. Customers never need to ask how many points a purchase earns.
- Status changes the rewards, not the math. Higher tiers feel different because of what members can unlock, while the cost per dollar of sales stays the same.
- Two ways to redeem. The $10 option gives a clear cash value; the rewards catalog gives choice and a sense of discovery.
- A yearly moment for every member. The Birthday Gift reaches the whole base, not only the top tier.
- An activity rule, not a hard expiry date. Points stay alive as long as the member keeps buying or redeeming, which rewards engagement rather than punishing it.
What can other retailers borrow?
Most retailers cannot copy Sephora’s scale, but they can copy its structure. A practical version for a specialty retailer is a single earn rate, one fixed cash-back redemption, two spend-based tiers that unlock a better reward menu, and a birthday offer for everyone. Set the tier thresholds from your own customers’ annual spend, so the top tier is reachable for your best customers without being common.
Before launching, agree with finance how to value unredeemed points and how the activity rule affects that value. If you are choosing between tiers and other models, our guide on how to start a loyalty program compares them side by side.
Frequently asked questions
Check the source materialHow do you reach VIB status at Sephora?
Sephora's program pages say members reach Very Important Beauty Insider status by spending $350 on Sephora merchandise in a calendar year, online, in Sephora stores, in Sephora at Kohl's stores in the US and through some delivery partners. Orders on Sephora TikTok Shop do not count toward VIB status.
How much does Rouge status require?
Rouge status requires $1,000 of Sephora merchandise spend in a calendar year, through the same channels that count for VIB. Rouge members can also redeem 2,500 points for a $100 Rouge Reward, according to Sephora's Beauty Insider questions page.
Do Sephora Beauty Insider points expire?
Yes, after inactivity. Sephora says unredeemed points expire when a member has had no point activity, meaning no purchase and no redemption for rewards or a Birthday Gift, for 12 months or more. Regular activity keeps the balance alive.
What can a smaller retailer learn from Beauty Insider?
Keep earning simple and equal for everyone, let status change what members can redeem rather than how fast they earn, and add a small annual moment such as a birthday gift. Those choices are cheap to explain at the counter and give every member a reason to come back.
